A Bouganvilla grew wild in an odd spot of my yard and was neglected. It is now more like a dome of a ground cover but very beautiful since I trimmed, fertilized and watered it well.

I bought a new one in a gallon can and would like to know if it could be trained to grow on a chain link fence or will just the back grow on the fence and rest turn into another thorny ground cover.

Bougies are very hearty. It helps to let people know what part of the country you are in when asking about plants.

The long thorny branches drop to the ground because they get heavy. I wouldn't bother fertilizing a mature plant where I live (Hawaii) - those buggas grow just fine. But not because you shouldn't. I just have other priorities on the property.

You can prune the heck out of it and I would. You can literally shape it into a vertical wall with or without the chain link. The little guy would certainly like the fence though. Just weave the branch through the links. I would prune any and all growth within a foot from the ground. Keep it clear so green waste debris won't get trapped and become home to a number of little pests - especially if you plan on watering frequently (less a problem in desert areas).

Snip away.

Your bougainvilla will love the chain link. It will pretty it up a bunch, too.
