Yeah, us Yanks in the north have been trying. Did you see the stats on who voted for whom in the last election? Basically the whole northeastern region and the whole west coast vote similarly... liberal. Everywhere in between is usually conservative. Overall, I have no problem with conservatives, and probably am one myself, fiscally at least, but socially liberal. When I heard that most conservatives went and voted for Bush because of the gay marriage issue I really had to hide my face in my hands and wonder about the intelligence of this country. I don't wonder anymore... I've now realized that most of the intelligent people have migrated to more enlightened areas of the nation, while the ignorant stay ignorant in their isolated fields in the middle of the country. It's sad that we have an electoral college system in this nation, it really should be by popular vote... only then will EVERY vote count.

Until the American people insist on breaking the hegemony of the two party system, which has stymied our democracy, I don't think your aspiration of electing a President who will embody our spirit will ever come to fruition.
