Lets look at this question as two parts

No shut down of engine. There are three or four things that can cause this to happen
1. check to see if the high idle is set down to the lowest setting see your manual to locate the knob on the dash. Turn it counter clockwise until it stops That is the lowest setting.

Start the engine then after a minute or so turn it off. If it did not shut down-----

step 2. Take it to a good diesel mechanic and demonstrate the problem.

Possible problems are

the high idle is still in the high setting
the shut down selonid is not working
the shut down cylinder diaphram has a hole in it and is not shuting down the injector pump
the shut down lever on the pump may be broken.

After these it is get a new pump assy. Not cheep but worth the investment if everything else on the car is working fine.

ITEM TWO A/C Take it to a qualified A/C service center. It is a crime to service A/C systems without the proper certifications and tools for recovering refrigerant.

no, put the refrigerant in the thingamobob, and then run some gas over the rotator splint. once this is done, you can pee into the fuel tank, and top of the washer fluid reserve using some nasty hooker spit. of course this works better if you are drinking a beer while driving in the back seat.
