It's a good idea to have a lid on a tank for a few reasons. A lighted hood provides light for your fish as well as any live plants you may have in the tank. It also covers the majority of the tank so that your fish won't jump out. In addition to those two things it helps to maintain proper temperature in the tank. If you have no lid on the tank you are more likely to have temperature fluxations, especially when using an airconditioner for example. It will also keep foreign objects like dust, or chemicals being sprayed from contaminating your fish's water.

Fish jumps out of tank for one main reason

1. - to escape avoid fights with other fishes, especially aggresive fish

To avoid this problem, you may like to try
1. Adding plants and rocks to providing hiding places for your fish
2. Separating the more aggressive fish from the rest of your fish (e.g. tiger barbs, cichilids etc)
3. Having a bigger tank - the aggressive fish is normally highly territorial and the tank may not be big enough for jumping fish to escape or swim out of its territory.
4. Covering the top of the aquarium with a lid - this solution is not recommended if there is an aggressive fish as only a handful of fish will jump for no reasons - even flying fish jumps out of water to escape predators and not for joy. Also, when the fish hit the lid, it may be painful for them. If the lid does not have holes (e.g. wooden plank) some fish that breathe from the surface will die (e.g. betta).
5. Lowering the level of water in the tank - again this is not recommended if there is a highly territorial fish terrorising the fish as it means the aggressive fish territory is smaller and it may want to expand its territory...

The answer is simple, buy a hood for your tank, most come with a light fixture that will illuminate your aquarium. They are fairly expensive depending on what size your tank is. My 55 gal hood cost me $85. Even though expensive it is a fool proof way of keeping your fish in your tank.

Depending how big your fish are, either decrease the amount of water, get a bigger tank or just get a cover.
