A bus company in a small town has an average number of riders of 800 per day. The bus company charges $2.25 for a ride. They conducted a survey of their customers and found that they will lose approximately 40 customers per day for each $.25 increase in fare. Graph and give the domain and range

The equation of a line is Y=M*X +B

Graphing the number of riders as vertical Y.
Graphing the number of fare increases as X horizontally.

The number of riders = 800 -40*X or
Y=M*X +B

Y= -40*X +800
When Y=800 then X=0
When Y=0 then X=20

You need to find the slope m. We already identified m as -40 by inspection, but generallyyou have two sets of valid points listed above.
Slope m= change in rise(y), divided by the change in run ( X)
So (Y2-Y1)/(X2-X1)= (800-0)/(0-20)= 800/-20= -40=m
so m= - 40

also from above, when X=0 then Y=B so B=Y
B=Y
m=-40

So Y= -40*X + 800

Enter some points into the equation and graph.
X Y
0 800
1 760
2 720
3 680
etc
10 400
etc
19 40
20 0

plot the points above X vs Y.
Label the X horizontal axis as the number of fare increases
Lable the Y vertical axis as the number of riders

The cost to ride is 2.25+X*0.25

Range: The range is the set of all possible output values (usually y), which result from using the function formula. Keep in mind that domain = INPUT and y = OUTPUT. So we can remember that the point (x,y) = (domain, range). In other words, INPUT = domain, which is x and range = OUTPUT, which is y. Just remember that the domain and range are ALL possible values that can work in the function.

So you have to know what makes sense interms of input and output values.

Such surveys are rarely accurate. Some bus riders that take the survey will try to skew it in a way... so it will put pressure on the Bus company to not raise the price.

However, even if they did raise the price 25 cents.... those who said that they would stop riding the bus, would quickly change their minds once they see the gas prices.
