Actually it is because of the marketing that the cigarette manufacters do. Also they (asian countries) do not have restrictive laws stopping ads. In the US because of consumer movement and a very strong previous Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, the US has banned ads on television, radio and some print advertising. Additionally, the number one market for the cigarette manufacturers are young smokers. Actually the earlier you start smoking the longer you will be a customer. THink about it most people don't start smoking at age 30.. So because asian countries are weaker with anti-smoking campaigns the cigarette companies have marketed heavily there.
Good Question

I don't know if that's necessarily true, but I think one reason why Asians might smoke is because cigarettes are SO CHEAP. We're talking about $1 USD per pack. So the argument like "oh cigarettes are expensive" isn't argument enough for people to want to quit.

yes, smoking & puffing is a cultural thing. i can assure that because i'm an asian living in southeast asia. although, i'm not big on smoking myself. i've tried smoking before but i wasn't into it & i'm still not into it.
everybody smokes here. it's odd if you don't smoke. many start from the age of 6. it's very easy to get cigarettes. many lie saying, "i'm buying cigarettes for my uncle". but then, they're the ones smoking it up.
irrespective if you're young or old, everybody smokes. the elders usually smoke up traditinal cigs... we called it here "kretek". very strong stuff. the younger generation smoke up regular cigs like "a mild" or "marlboro lights". it's a very common thing here.

In Japan, they don't have some of the consumer protection laws we have here. They have things like musical cigarettes with a name roughly translated means "good for you" or "healthy choice". That might be a part of it, lol.
