A first-class stamp works in the same way as a regular 39 cent stamp. The recipient of your letter/package should receive his/her content in approximately the same amount of time. My mom went to the post office to buy regular 39 cents stamps and was given "first-class" stamps... so I am assuming that the two are interexchangeable.

Recently issued "First Class" stamps (in the U.S.) are good for 39c in postage for any purpose. But it's a bit more complicated, as "First Class" stamps issued during previous postal rates are only worth whatever the first class rate was THEN. To be sure, if the stamps are more than a year old check at your post office.

First Class stamp is regular postage. If you need to send something bigger then a letter you need to have it weighed so you can give it the proper postage. that way your recipient wont end up paying his post man when he receives it.
