The Ring 1 & 2 were pretty scary. The Others w/ Nicole Kidman was somewhat scary, but it takes a lot to really scare me. Forget The Grudge either Japanese or American...just plain stupid. For good gore there's the Saw movies. Or even the new House of Wax. Even Jeeper's Creepers are good for just a gore/startle factor.

OH wow thank you for asking this here it goes...
Anything by Dario Argento, would HIGHLY and STRONGLY recommend, Suspiria and Opera along with Phenomena
Also, Dead Alive, Evil Dead I and II and Army of Darkness
Re-Animator, Dawn of the Dead (the original) and Dawn of the Dead, Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the original) and a lot of Japanese horror, check out anything by takashi Miike, Chanwook Park, and Akira Kurosawa, good stuffs.

Other horror flicks I would strongly recommend John Carpenters The Thing, and Session 9

When a stranger calls back is a scary movie. It's not a slasher movie, but it is definitely freaky!! This movie was made in the 90's.

It depends on it you want gross, scary, or weird. I suggest The Ring (or Ringu) if you want creepy. For gross, I suggest Peter Jackson's Dead-Alive, and for weird, I always liked Jack Frost about a killer snowman. Best of luck!

One of my favs (besides a lot of the ones above) is Ingmar Bergman's "Hour of the Wolf". Even if you don't like subtitles, this is a really delicious little chiller.
