I try to be an honest man, but I sometimes feel I have to lie in order to protect peoples feelings, including my own. And I also lie once in a while to weasel out of things I don't want to do.

To me lying is so ingrained in our decision making and self-image and such a useful social skill, they I really can't conceive a life without it. I think the inability to lie would be a mental illness. It wouldn't aid functioning. What do you think?

Good question. All societies depend on deception in order to socially function. As a small example, consider that grandma says, "Do you like my new hat?" It looks like roadkill, very embarrassing, so what do you say?

You say, "It's a beautiful hat, Grandma." Why tell the truth and make her sad?
