There are two systems used for engine monitoring on modern vehicles. The red indicators are mechanical faults and the vehicle should NOT be driven and the other is an orange check engine light that the engine, body, and trans computers use to let you know that there is a fault in their monitored systems. The orange light could mean lots of things, so the vehicle should be taken to a reputable garage for the systems to be "scanned" that it so the information can be retrieved from the computers so an accurate diagnosis can be made.

Normally, a steady "Check Engine" light means that you have an emissions related problem. It could be anything from you forgot to put the gas cap back on after fueling to bad O2 sensors to a number of other issues. If the light is flashing, usually that means very bad stuff, such as low oil pressure. As long as the light is steady, you should be alright to drive it around for a little while. If the light is flashing, take it to a mechanic ASAP, as in yesterday. Either way, you should get it checked out.

The only way you can find out what is going on is to take your truck to a Ford dealer or a reputable mechanic who has the proper equipment to pull fault codes from the ECM. The OBD scanners at autozone and advance are ok, but it can only read the fault codes, they cannot read bad parts. A Ford ECM has two "sides" , one side produces fault codes or commonly called trouble codes , and the other produces hard codes which identifies bad parts. one bad part can cause the ECM to produce several fault codes. Chances are that you have a bad part and only a complete scan of your ECM will be able to detect this.

You have to have an OBDII tester hooked up to the computer. Don't freak out, its free. Just go to Advance Auto or Auto Zone. They'll hook up the scanner and tell you the code and the system its effecting. They don't have the technical knowhow to diagnose your problem so write back with the code and the symptom. I'll be able to tell you the possible problems, and cures! I'm a certified tech, and I try to help people on here from getting ripped off!

If the car is running okay, it is probably something very minor, like the oxygen sensor. You will need to take it to a mechanic to find out what code(s) the car's computer is giving.

Make sure the air filter box is clamped tightly shut and your gas cap is screwed on tightly...at least three clicks.
