It's to indicate what you just said was meant as a joke and not to construed as an insult, or stupidity, or any other negative thing. It is also easier than writing "hahahahahaha"... all the time. Because we are social in this anti social world called cyberspace, we tend to make extra efforts to get our emotions across to the intended reader with acronyms like "lol".
