My mom fed it to all of my sisters...she has done it with AT LEAST 3 and no one has died yet :P

lol

If your doctor said to give it to the baby, then it should be alright!!!
and if you STILL feel cautious about giving him/her then go out and but some suppositories... those little waxy capsule things you shove in their butt... i hate watching my mom do that, but boy do they work!

When my second son was born he was very constipated from the get go. We tried everything until the doctor suggested Karo Syrup. We started with every other day and with no change we changed to everyday. Just a teaspoon in one or two bottles should be PLENTY! My son is now two years old and still deals with constipation every once in awhile. A cup of milk with Karo clears it right up. Good luck and I hope everything works out.

It's likely that the Karo will help with the constipation somewhat, and since your newborn doesn't have teeth yet (I assume), at least cavities are conveniently out of the question. However, it might still be taxing upon your baby's pancreas, so go easy on it.

Additionally, you might consider giving your child some Pedialyte or other electrolyte solutions. Constipation is occasionally a symptom of inadequate liquid intake. Also, if your child is eating any semi-solid foods (such as prepared baby foods), go for varieties that are high in insoluble fiber.

Do not give her Kayro everyday, it is not safe. I would suggest calling the pediatrician for advice. A newborn should not be as constipated as you are describing. You can also give her a smal amount if diluted baby white grape juice, that will help her. BUT definitly call her pediatrician. No one here is a doctor that you know of, or that could probably prove it online, so take care of her, get off the computer, and ask her doctor for advice. that is what they are for, it's not like babies come with an instruction manuel, and newborns are generally not constipated, unless you have been changing her formula, or adding cereal to her diet.

OMG! Your baby is only ONE MONTH OLD! It is totally NORMAL for a one month old to poop every other day, especially if the baby is breastfed! The quality of the poop is what you should be looking at, not how often she goes. If her stool is hard, then perhaps try another formula or nurse her more (cutting out the dairy in YOUR diet may help too). If you fell you MUST give her something (and I wouldn't), ask about mineral oil. It takes just a very small amount to help lubricate the stool and make it easier to pass.
It doesn't sound to me like your baby is constipated. I would get myself a new pediatrician as well -- this one doesn't quite know what they are doing!

Finally, a word is in order concerning some things you shouldn't use to treat constipation. Kayro syrup and honey have the remote possibility of transmitting botulism to infants, so don't use these products in children less than a year old. Likewise, unprocessed juice may contain harmful bacteria, such as E. Coli. Also, enemas are not recommended for infants--save those for the older kids and use them only under the guidance of your child's doctor.

Is she actually constipated, or is she just the type who happens to poop only every other day? Not all babies poop several times a day, or even every day. Constipation is when the poop comes out hard, dry, and in little round pellets. Also, it's normal and very common for newborns to grunt and groan as they poop. If she's doing this but her poop looks normal (mushy) it's not constipation...she's probably just not an everyday pooper. :)

Every other day for a bowel movement isn't such a big deal....really. I don't like the Karo idea, though, it is so sugary. Make sure the baby has plenty of water to drink...that should help a lot.

Personally I wouldnt give it to her at all...but I definitely would not give it to her EVERY day! If she only goes every other day, then that may be all she needs to go. Not every baby goes ever day.Her body is not ready to digest Karo syrup - it is corn syrup! which is considered one of the five worst foods you can eat! I wouldnt want my newborn eating that every day...ick! If you are concerned about wanting to give her something every day, I would talk to your pediatrician again.

My MIL had to give it to her son 34 years ago- her doctor specified, a little on the paci or in the bottle EVERY day. She says "I quickly learned what else it was good for." We now keep it with us for those emergencies when baby decides to howl her head off in a public place and we can't leave right away. Don't get in the habit of giving it to her a million times a day, otherwise its fine.

I honestly do not know, but that strikes me a little odd that the doctor would suggest Karo syrup...
