IGNORANCE: I hope you can forgive them. Some Lithuianian people get called Russian also. Some of the unenlightened in the USA call Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Laosian, Cambodian, and Vietnamese people all the same.

I'm sorry for the ignorant people. Please just correct them, educate them, and continue with your business.

Because Ukraine is a republic that was part of the old Soviet Union. Most people from Ukraine speak Russian because the Soviets made Russian the official language of the Soviet Union. Now Ukraine is it's own country again. Many people from former Soviet republics are miss identified as Russians. Over time as people begin to realize that that part of the world has it's own unique cultures people will learn the difference. You have to remember it wasn't that long ago that they were all behind the iron curtain of communism.

That's a great question. It is probably because Ukraine was suppressed for so many years by the Russians, that few people really know about Ukraine as a separate ethnicity, language, traditions. Also, since more people in the west associate the Cyrillic alphabet with Russia--they think all ethnics that use Cyrillic are somehow associated with Russian--and that they must understand Russian. (It will take some time to disintegrate these false ideas.)

Isn't the Ukraine part of Russia? If it IS, it would be like wondering why people call you American if you are from Texas.

Get yourself ready for the rest of the world, they are pretty ignorant when it comes to Eastern Block or Asia, or anywhere where you don't have nice sea, good banks, maybe oil underneath? Two options: send 'em to hell (not so efficient, they are not going there anyways, since there is no hell), or explain them very very nice, as they will judge Ukraine by how many Ukrainians they meet in their lifetime.

good luck
