Laughing at him, makes him think it is okay and that it is funny, when actually it is not. Your child is definitely old enough to learn right from wrong, and being a divorced mom of two boys myself, I would suggest that you firmly, but not harshly let him know that what he is doing is not acceptable. DO NOT go and buy a new trash can, why should you buy new ones when you should be teaching him what "no" means??? I am sorry to be blunt or rude, but a small amount of dicipline is not going to scar him. I have two boys that I have raised by myself since they were 1 & 3, and had I not diciplined them, OMG, ther is no telling!!! YES...all kids do something whacky as you have described, but the only way they will stop is by letting them know we are not happy with what they have done. One of my boys is a highly functional autistic, and now at 11 & 13, I have the best, most well manner boys. I am not saying beat them, just show your child right from wrong, you are your child's teacher until he/she moves out as a young adult. I always think too about how my parents would have handled the same situation with me, and I really respect my parents. When they compliment me on the boys, i always thank them for teaching me.

Watch him. When he is about to throw something in the trash, no matter what it is, call him over to you. Have him give you the thing and than give him a sweet. Ignore the trash throwing. If you laugh he will keep doing it.
You could just put the trash cans up for a while or check the trash before you take it out.
Keep the toilet lid closed, too.

didnt someone tell you what kids do? You did not have a dog or a cat before.
You are supposed to CLEAN UP really well before you have children and while your children are children
do you cover your electrical outlets?
Make sure glasses and pans are away from the edge
Have you baby proofed your coffee table?
I mean we black folks are so "dumb" according to some why do we baby proof our houses?
I would pick up a parenting book
GO GET A TRASH CAN WITH A LID next he will be bring the trash out of the pale
just because people HAVE children doesnt mean they NEED children
just my opinion

I'd say get a trash can with a lid. Maybe not all over the house but in the rooms he does it in. But he's 1 I think if you show him "NO" and do some thing negative like spank his hand when he does it he will put 2 n 2 together.

Why don't you keep all of this so called important stuff out of the child's way.
Need to start teaching the child right from wrong. In other words pat his or her behind. Doesn't hurt to have a little discipline, or else the child will be throwing you in the trashcan... Good Luck!

It is funny but now is the time to start showing him not to throw things. You take whatever he's about to throw and say NO-NO. If he's already thrown it you go get it and again say NO-NO mustn't throw things. You should try not to let him see you laugh because then he'll want to do it again and again. Some parents wait too long to start to teach their children acceptable behavior and then get upset when the children are teenagers and they're out of control. Enjoy him but also teach him.

Why are you advocating violence to take place the place surely considerate, and open debate could be occurring. instead people who've been prepared are displaying up and disrupting any and all debate...what type of yankee are you???? Do you rather think of its honest to shout down by way of insane and misguided jingo-isms, or too ask significant questions and work together in a real communication?how are you able to no longer see the handwritting of the coverage industry at the back of all of this???

I keep my trash cans covered for that very reason, in fact, my kitchen trash is behind a door with a child protector on it...sometimes you gotta protect your stuff...around 2 they grow out of it, and it is no longer a problem, but in my case, then you just have another one to deal with the problem. Good luck!

Yes, had this problem. Yes, very cute, very very funny! BUT do not laugh!!! Tell the little one, No No... then go to the OTHER room and laugh quietly... had to do this with two little stinkers who loved to trash my things! Good luck.
