Tipping is what's known as gratuity. That means that someone tips on how well they liked the service. Over in Europe, the servers are paid an hourly wage...but here in America, it's dog eat dog. Face it...we're all trying to survive, and it's almost an incentive for servers to do their jobs to the fullest in order to make more money. When it comes down to it, being a server is almost an art form....you have to be able to think on your toes, and be able to relate with any table.
Oh yeah, by the way, tipping is cold hard cash that you take home. Some people need the money right away, and that's why tipping is convenient.

It's because the capitalist, that is the employer aims to seek the highest profit that is probable for their organisation. They encourage their staff to work hard for the patronage. This way, the employer feels that if the employee has used all their skill, blood sweat and tears on the customer - they will then reward them for good service. Hence giving a tip which bumps up the employees hourly rate. The employer works on paying each employee a basic wage.

Because some small businesses cannot afford to pay higher wages. Tipping helps close the gap. Now if only people will learn how to properly tip -- and more servers subscribe to the "service with a smile" no matter how much the customer irritates you.

Tipping is like tradition. You honestly gonna pick up 20 smackers left on the table for you and run outside to catch your customer an say "Hey, it's ok, I get an extra pound an hour. Here's your 20 back". Not gonna happen.

Because that would require employers to give more money to their employees from their own pockets- and that's not going to happen!
Besides, tipping is an incentive for servers to provide better service...they don't just get it because they exist...the better the service I get, the better the tip the server gets.

They should only be paid for the quality of service provided. If everyone made the same they would not care about how they treated their customers.

Tipping is to reward for service. If tipping was eliminated service will go down. It is an incentive.

So they can provide better service. If there was no tip involved many waiters/waitresses wouldn't go out of their way to please the costumers.
