My baby is 4 months old and she will eat nothing but breast milk. No formula. No baby food. No cereal. She is healthy she weighs 17 lbs. Should I be concerned about her not eating anything else? Or will breastmilk be enough?

Human milk is not only enough, it is all a baby is *supposed* to get until she is at least 6 months old. It is actually enough for the first full year, although most babies are interested in starting solids before then.

You can tell when a baby may be ready for solids. Look for these signs of readiness: appearance of teeth, ability to sit unsupported, and development of the "pincer grasp"--when a baby picks up small objects with the thumb and *one* finger. If baby has at least the last 2 (and preferably all 3), she may be ready for solids.

If you wait until baby is developmentally ready for solids, you never have to deal with "baby food". Instead, give her a chunk of banana or a soft peach. If she takes a bite, likes it, and wants more, you'll know she's ready. Other good choices for early foods are grated raw apple or carrot, baked potato (white or sweet), or brown rice. Just give her whatever foods you like--one at a time--and let her decide if she wants it or not.

Most 4 month old babies aren't ready for cereal yet. They don't have interest, won't open for a spoon, and automatically push the food back out with their tongue. If your daughter is doing these things, she isn't ready for cereal yet. Give her a couple weeks before you try again. She doesn't really need to be eating cereal until 6 months. Until 6 months, breast milk is fine.

I was concered because my breastfed baby wouldn't drink formula, and it scared me that, if something happened to me or if I had to go somewhere and didn't have enough milk pumped, she would be hungry. My doctor told me that breast milk is sweeter than formula, and suggested I add just a LITTLE (less than half a teaspoon) of brown sugar to the bottle. Once I was able to get her to drink formula with the brown sugar, then I stopped adding brown sugar and she drinks it fine. I'd check with your doctor before adding the sugar, though,

17 lbs is actually rather large for a 4 month old, so don't be concerned. She certainly is getting everything she needs from your breast milk and growing just fine!

Breast milk is fine, especially at such a young age. My daughter just started eating cereal and baby food about 3 weeks ago and she is almost 8 months old. Some babies start earlier, some later. Babies have iron stores in their bodies from birth to 6 months old, so don't worry about the cereal for a few months yet. You can thin the cereal down greatly and try a few times a week or just give her another month or so to develop before trying again. Good luck!

I have 2 kids both breastfed. Usually you start cereal at 4 months when formula fed and 6 months when breastfed. Your baby is fine, 17 pounds is big for a 4 month old. Babies are usually about 20 pounds around a year.Breastmilk is good for now.

Keep trying with the cereal but don't force it. It may take a month or two more for her to get the hang of it. She won't starve on breastmilk so just give her some more time.

Breast milk is the best thing a 4 month old can have. Don't worry. They won't drink breast milk forever!

Your baby is fine for now. Pablum is the first start to extra feeding. Next time she cries for the breast, wait a bit and offer her pablum. Wait it out for awhile before you give in. Most babies just don't know what to do about the spoon being shoved at them.

I wanted to thank you for your touching answer to my question concerning anti-abortion posters. It was very touching. Although I am pro-choice I much prefer for people to choose to have their babies.

She will be just fine on breast milk...Mine was up to about 40oz. a day, at that point, just to maybe give you a helpful comparison, but as we all know, all babies are different!
