This is not a sacrifice, nor is it a fielder's choice. A sacrifice is only on flyballs or on bunts, a groundball which is swung at is never a sacrifice. A fielder's choice is only scored when a hitter reaches base but another runner is put out on the bases or should have been put out except for an error. If the hitter is put out it is just that an out.

In this scenario, the batter would just be scored an out by the score keeper. A sacrifice can only be a fly out or a bunt attempt which moves a runner up on the base path. If it was a check swing, then the scorer may determine that it is a sacrifice. This normally happens when the team that the batter is on is playing at home. It is entirely up to the score keeper and their perception on a call such as that.

no, this is not a sacrifice.........to be a sacrifice the batter must have bunted at the ball and be "obviously" giving himself up to advance the runner.

and mister bob is incorrect, in the scenario you mentioned, it would NOT be a fielders choice......it would only be a fielders choice if the defensive team did indeed make the play to get the lead runner and the batter reached base because of that defensive choice.

edit to big dogg: no, its simply a ground out. it would ONLY be a fielders choice if the defensive team tried for the lead runner and batter reached base. this IS the way official scoring works.....no questions, no deviations.

Sorry. This is not a sacrifice. It is called a Fielder's Choice. The fielder (of the groundball) has to decide if they can get the lead runner or if they must settle for throwing out the batter.

I dunno what this person is talking about. No coach in their right mind (or their left mind even) would yell at someone if they had no chance at throwing out the lead runner and might've missed both opportunities.

yes, it is called a sacrifice ground out so it is a sacrifice not a fielders choice. a fielders choice is when the runner is out at second but the batter reaches first safely.

Any baseball player will state the obvious, you ALWAYS try to throw the furthest runner out first. If this play occured, you'd have an upset manager yelling his lungs out, saying "What the **** were you thinking!"

I think so....as long as the runner advances, it should be a sacrifice.
