He realized that the car he was driving wasn't his. It turns out, his wife's lover had been forced to leave the car behind, while he snuck out the back door. The husband the next morning, grabbed the wrong keys because he didn't have his morning glass of Coffee, and by the time he got half way to work, he was finally awake enough to realize he was driving a car other then his own.
How he managed to get a divorce that quickly though, involves the manipulation of time and space, and is entirely too complex to describe here.

Because he had previously given it the topic a lot of thought. Circumstances such as these don't just happen over night - events take place in relationships that can be just unacceptable and then the mind works overtime to process these events.
He could have been prompted by something that he saw as he was driving to work and it has assisted him to decide this answer,

Because he had a sudden revelation that he wasn't happy with his life. And, after all, life is too short! (The best way to cut-out a wound is with a razor-sharp surgeon's scalpel ... it is by far so much easier (and less painful) than an old,rusty knife. Hello?!.
