You will find that the numbers generally start at 1 and go through to about 300-500 then start again. They normally would start at a street corner at the beginning of a new suburb boundary. This is so that if Emergency vehicles need to respond they know that 1 Parramatta Rd, Homebush (eg) is near cross st of Bridge St (eg). If the numbers went from 1-5000, just imagine how long an ambulance would take to find 4175 Parra Rd if no cross st is given!

This is also occuring on Princes Highway. At president ave Kograh, the numbers on 2 adjoing properties are both 1 Princes Hwy. One is in Kograh, the other is in Rockdale. The mail men don't get confused because one starts at Kograh and the other at Rockdale.

A little confusing but you should get the jist of it!

By an extraordinary coincidence exactly this question appeared in the Big Questions section of the Sydney Morning Herald this morning. If you keep buying it you may find out the answer.

You have to know which suburb you are visiting.
