If you have Windows XP, plug in a known USB 2.0 device, like a flash memory key. If you get an error message about high-speed ports, you have the old USB 1.x.

To upgrade, you need a card installed inside your computer. If you can do it yourself, you can get the card for $15 or so. If you have to pay somebody else to do it, expect to pay $50-75 total. If you have a laptop, you may be able to find a USB 2.0 card that plugs into a PCMCIA or PC Card slot, but it probably won't be cheap.

Oh, and you won't get as good performance with upgraded USB as you'd get with a motherboard that natively supports the 2.0 spec. Some USB devices even specify that they're not guarateed to work with add-on USB - only with the kind that's built-in.

Might want to just think about a new computer if you can swing it. There's a chip war going on between Intel and AMD, so prices are insanely low right now.

Usually if you plug an item in it may say you have USB 1.0 and that you need USB 2.0 to run this device. You don't upgrade. You install a USB 2.0 card.

Youbcan go to Control Panel, SYSTEM, HARDWARE, DEVICE MANAGER.

Look for UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS CONTROLLERS. You should see something like "USB HOST CONTROLLER" or "ENHANCED USB 2.0 CONTROLLER"...

*IF* it has 2.0 in the description, you have the latest USB controller......
