It seems the best way to find a cheap airfare for me, at least, is to keep checking the many different travel agency websites regularly as some cheaper fares do spontaneously appear from time to time.

For me, flying from the east coast, I was able to get a roundtrip airfare to Manila for $820, which is about as cheap as I have seen. That was for mid-April this year.

There is a website, called Skyauctions.com, that auctions off airfares to Manila and Cebu regularly and can be quite cheap but you have to fly between certain dates and not have a choice of airline. Also, watch for their fine print as they add on for certain things such as flying on a weekend or flying during a holiday time as well as what departure city you are leaving.

Sometimes varying your departure city will help. Sometimes taking a domestic flight out of a smaller airport to a international airport to catch the flight to the Philippines will result in a lower fare.

Another route, if you have time and money is scace, you can arrange to get one of the many credit cards that are offering one frequent flyer mile for every dollar charged. Normally by yourself, this would take more than your lifetime to accrue, but if you arrange with family and friends whom you trust and they trust you, you can charge supermarket gift cards for them and have them pay you back in cash/check and then you use that to pay back your credit card. You pocket the frequent flyer miles and they get nothing but the gift cards to buy their groceries and knowing they are helping you accrue frequent flyer miles towards your goal. This can be expanded to paying their utility bills and other high ticket items as they occur. I saw this on Dateline where a woman was profiled doing this so it is legitimate to do as far as I know. She was able to get a free roundtrip to Australia for her and her husband.

Northwest usually has the lowest fares and they fly direct to Manila from Detroit or Minneapolis. I'm going in September and the fare is $1003.
