Twice today it is made a very loud humming noise. The first time I shut it off, and hosed it off. When it came back on it was OK, but then it made a God awful loud noise again a little bit later. Could it be a compressor going bad? It is still blowing cold. Please don't just answer to call for service because I'll do that anyway if keeps happening.

I shook it a little the first time, but it didn't help. I doubt if you would want to move those things too much with the danger of damaging the lines going into it. This is the outdoor central air unit so there is no filter there.

Sounds like the condenser fan motor is dropping out, causing the compressor to run at EXTREMELY high pressures because there is no air being drawn across the condensing coils, or the coils are dirty internally even though the surface appears to be clean. Wash THROUGH the coils, not just the surface. This will clean them properly, and reduce the operating pressures. If fan motor: check electrical connections for burnt wires, and replace run capacitor before replacing motor.

(hvac tech gave a good answer), I suggest you check the fan in the unit is still turning freely and still properly attached to the motor shaft - if that slips loose it may not be cooling the heat exchanger properly, and may be running up against other parts as well. Noisy, inefficient, and fairly common problem.

I don't have any real answer but just bang it a couple of times. Have you checked the filter?
