Usually has to do with the reason they got into the priesthood to begin with or what their experiences were during their time serving that makes them change their mind.
I know a man who entered the priesthood about 80 years ago in Spain, he was poor and was sent off to seminary when he was 8 years old by his family, so he did not really "choose" to serve. After about 25 years of service he became disillusioned when asked the church for help to provide medicine for his ill mother and they said no. He also saw many priests die alone in their beds -- some found on the floor attempting to crawl to the door --and he vowed he woudl not die in the same way.
He ended up moving to the US and falling in love with a young woman who attended his church. He received a dispensation from the Pope and was married and had children.
Hopefully this helps you to undersand how a man ends up in this situation. I understand it was quite the scandal back when it happened in the 1950s and I bet it is still quite confusing and quite the scandal when it happens today. But please try to understand that people have unique situations and if you can understand their situation ou can react with a little more compassion. Best wishes -- and good question!

Priest, especially Catholic priests face a lot of stress, because of rigorous vows and a lack of public understanding and slander. Aside from that many of the them turn to a secular life because thay are weak and can no longer adhere to their vows. It's not nessecarily a lack of faith but the overwhelming urge to live life, and have a family is strongest now, when they see so much grief coming into the church. Other than that, you could live with a mistake for a long time without realizing it's a mistake. You can also grow tired of the direction in which the church is moving. A lot of things change and the religous world is more political than many would imagine.

One does not study "it" to be a priest. He attends seminary and takes holy orders and then he is a priest. Some realize after the fact that they are not cut out for the rigors of the religious life and then leave and stay single or marry. I was once in a monastery preparing to become a Christian Brother of St. John Baptist de la Salle. I left six weeks before taking vows. Trust me!! The decision to stay or leave is a very difficult one. I was grateful I realized I was not cut out for the religious life BEFORE I took vows. Some, however, are not so lucky. Refrain from judging them. That is not your place or job.

Because they decided the priesthood was not for them. They changed their minds. You are allowed to do that, you know.

What are you talking about. Questions need a subject. 'It', is not a subject.
