As for protecting my idea, I was told for starters, I can write down details and drawings of my idea, mail it back to me certified mail. Can this be one way of legally protecting myself for starters? Will my letter be considered a form of government property? Thx

To protect an original invention OR a significant improvement to an existing product, a patent would be filed. Here's the USPTO's definition: http://www.uspto.gov/web/offices/pac/doc/general/index.html#patent

NOLO is a great, free informational site. Also, be sure to read what the USPTO (United States Patent & Trademark Office) has to say about patents.

Associations may be a good avenue to explore. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

Step 1. DO NOT buy that kit advertised on TV that is supposed to help you bring your idea to life and protect it from being stolen. they will steal your money, and then your invention.

Step 2. Visit http://www.uspto.gov - the US Patent and Trademark Office, a good place to start researching if your invention has in fact, already been invented. And if not, a good place to research how to patent an invention.

Step 3. Develop the product, with sketches, diagrams, whatever you need to show how it would work and be built, etc. Find a lawyer well-versed in the intricacies of patent law to help you file the patent properly, so you are protected. It may be pricey, but it would be worth it.

You may not need the lawyer if you are very careful and do your research well.

Good luck, and don't be a patent troll. ;-)
