I was just offered a weanling for free All I would have to pay would be for shots and gelding. I live in PA near the Maryland line. What is the average that you pay for those. I am trying to come up with a figure for initial costs.

The expenses may vary by region. You may want to contact a few equine veterinarians in your area to inquire as to what they charge. There is the cost of the surgery, anesthetics used, cost of other vaccinations given, not to mention the barn call fee. This type of procedure may run between $200-$300 after all is said and done. Of course he can not be gelded until both of his testicles have dropped down, and the time frame may vary for this to occur.

If in doubt, contact a vet and talk with him/her. Have them come out and take a look at the colt and explain the entire procedure to you. That way you will become comfortable with what will happen when the time comes.

In New York, it is about 300. However, it depends how far along he is & how well he acts. The older he is, the more it will be & the tougher.

Good Luck!`
