mix some cayanne pepper and water and spray it around, or just put cayanne pepper straight. I know it works with dogs and since possums are close to the ground it may work. Also try ammonia, maybe some clorox and other strong smelling stuff.

I think possums live virtually everywhere. It's amazing, really, since they aren't the brainiest of beasts. They sure get hit by cars a lot. "Why did the chicken cross the road? To show the possum that it could be done." I don't know of any possum deterrent, but I have caught many - including a mother with 3 babies - in a box trap. Havahart is one brand, but there are others. Feed stores usually have them, sometimes for rental, but in LA you might not be near any feed stores.... I have seen them for sale at Home Depot here in Sonoma County. Your local animal control may know where you can rent a box trap. Anyway, the trap is a cage open on one end. You bait it with something attractive to possums (and they are omnivores, eating lots of different things. You might try fruit, since that's less likely to attract something even nastier, like rats...) The animal enters the cage to get the goodies, steps on a metal plate, and the weight of the animal causes the trap to close behind it. After you catch the critters, you can take them somewhere far away and release them. It would certainly be preferable to take them out into a wilder area, where they won't become someone else's problem. Also, be careful - they do have sharp teeth and can bite.

They are being attracted to some sort of food. Take the food away and they will have to look elsewhere. Make certain all garage and refuse containers are sealed tightly and they can not get the lids off and everything in the area is picked up. If someone is feeding pets, dogs and cats, outside and leaving anything behind, even the empty dish with a few crumbs in it, they will come looking if they don't have something better to dine on. Otherwise, trap them in a humane trap and remove them from the area.

WHY do you want them to go away ? They are not hurting anyone. They rarely bite, even when cornered. They are part of the citys' nightly "cleaning crew"...eating anything in the garbage they can find. They only live 2 to 3 years, even if they avoid the cars. They do not eat meat, but love fruits & veggies. They're really very shy nocturnal animals. They are our ONLY marsupial in the USA.
I would be alot more concerned about any RATS in the complex ! They WILL bite, and carry ALOT more diseases. And are REALLY disgusting........imo.
I have a HUGE outside possum, named Blossom; here in Missouri...in town. She will take food from my hand, very carefully, with 72 teeth, thank goodness !...and she loves peaches and grapes. She even brought her babies to see me...like she had a choice, they were still hanging all over her ! :-)

Two methods. You can institute a community possum watch or buy a possum hound. Finding either of these ineffective you can poll your neighbors to see if any of them are originally from
Tennessee. If so they will probably invite you over for sunday possum dinner.
