Pick something that you know (something you like to sing along with on the radio). Don't rap. Don't do a "guy" song if you're a girl. Don't do anything with BIG high notes unless you can sing.
Oh, and get a feel for the bar -- example: don't sing disco at a country bar. Not that you can't, but it's harder to pull off.
Slower songs are easier to sing than faster ones. Heavy metal/rock is harder to do unless you have the voice for it. Songs that ask for some sort of crowd response (YMCA) can be easier because the crowd will be more forgiving if they're singing along.
Most important - just relax and have fun. While some people can really sing, most people who do karaoke just do it for the fun and don't care if they can't sing. Pick something you're comfortable with and just go for it!

Pick a song you know and that you like. Make sure it is at least a little up beat and that the vocals are within the range of your voice. Have a couple of drinks to loosen up a bit and wait until a little while into the night when the crowd has had a few drinks of their own. Then just let it go the most important thing in karaoke is to be confident, let the music flow.

Being a Pro singer for 25 years, my best advice is to let the mike do the work, and don't whatever you do, drink anything with ice in it before you sing, and the worst thing you can eat are peanuts. Both swell the vocal chords .
But most importantly, enjoy. Remember, in entertainment, nerves are a good thing

"Say a little Prayer for you" usually gets a lot of people to eventually sing along with you. You wont look like a complete idiot..theyre gonna love you.

When you get up to the mic, Look at only the TV.
Zone your self into the song.
You are the only person in the room.
Let go have fun.
You may get hooked like I did. I have my own disk that I take every weekend. Good luck

Definately get a drink or two in you first. Also, you might want to find the song you are going to sing and play it on 'repeat' all night tonight to practice. Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
