Always glad to help another cajun!
We do need more info, as a previous post asked.
What kind of internet connection does he have: DSL, cable, dial?
You need DSL or cable to use the netgear - it won't work with dialup. The netgear goes between his puter and the DSL/cable modem. So, first make sure that his machine still can contact the internet through the netgear. Then you should be able to connect to the netgear either wired or wirelessly, and use the internet through it.

your friend needs a wireless router, does he/she have one?

**EDIT** You can use his/her internet connection through the router just by using your laptops ethernet port, (attaching a physical cable between your laptop and the router itself) but it won't be wireless obviously.
