Not really... maybe that stereotype took place in the 50's or a little after but by now, Germany has accomplished so many great things that most people just think of it as a strong, leading European nation.

I think there may be a general "worry" that Germans didn't take enough responsibility for the Holocaust, but I don't think many people think all Germans are STILL Nazis. Plus, one has to realize that the common folks during WWII didn't have a choice but to support the Nazi agenda. Resisting meant being shot in the streets. That's the joy of a dictatorship.

And, genocide still happens. Look at Rwanda or the Dirty War in Argentina. We're all looking the other way and the world keeps turning...

No, most Americans do not think all Germans are nazis. You probably met some people just trying to get a rise out of you. Kind of like saying in chat all Brits have bad teethe, not true but it gets any Brit in the room mad.

I think a lot of Americans will say that about Germans, but when really pressed about it the Americans will admit that not all Germans are Nazis.

Why they make that claim I can't say for sure, but I guess it's because a lot of Americans (like most people in the world) are ignorant. They use television and movies to get their opinions of other cultures, and Germans on tv and movies are often portrayed as Nazis for comedic affect.

Americans are also prone use stereotypes out of laziness. It's not just us though, most people are guilty of this as well. Witness the European phenomenon of assuming all Americans are fat, Bush-loving cowboys.

I don't know why they think that. I don't know how many do, but there are some. Because sometimes when I tell people my ancestors are german, they say - nazi! And that could not be farther from the truth. My family left germany b/c of all that terrible stuff. And I can only go so far back in my family tree b/c hitler bombed one of the churches where the birth records were kept. and we're not jewish - he hated everyone.

They were a little crazy. It really depends on the age of the people that you were talking to as well. I've
noticed that many people that came of age in the WW2 era still hate the Japanese people and still think that all Germans are evil Nazis.

I don't think many US people think that Germans are Nazis. They do think Germans are dry humored, serious, intelligent, stick up the butt types though. And they make good beer. I don't think most US citizens think much about Jewish persecution these days, well not until Israel came into the spotlight recently that is. And certainly Germany is not what would jump to mind these days.

Absolutely not. A great portion of US citizens are of German decent, at least in part. My own grandmother grew up with the last name Hess (no relation!) during WW2. Needless to say, she was very happy to marry and trade it in for a less controversial surname, but we've never been ashamed to be part German, nor do we think the huge majority of the German people today are Nazis. Unfortunately, both countries have freaks who subscribe to their ideology.

No, I don't believe all Germans are Nazis, you can't blame the people of today for what happened over 60 years ago.
