Go to your local hardware store. Kwikset brand manufactures a remote operated lock. It's just as secure as your car or garage door. The last time I priced them out, they were in the $200 dollar range. This was about two years ago.

50 yards? Outstanding! 50 feet - more achievable. Now - your front door - hmmm... electronic lock sets are out there, spend about 200-300 bucks and over and above your standard lockset on the door, the door frame will carry a strike assembly that releases once activated and lets you just push through the door like it was unlocked. same thing the banks use for the ATM just inside their front doors after hours. 'Course you'll need a smartcard reader, who wants to swipe a piece of plastic, just get close to the reader. Better yet, why not spring for a RFID chip implanted under the skin of your forearm, or under the skin between your thumb and forefinger($400-800). Oh yeah - those only work at a distance of 2 or 3 inches, tops. And your RF based garage door opener can be hacked by a kid with a digital sequencer spliced into a $10 walkie-talkie or garage door opener remote. Not good. Buy a good Medeco lockset, they are unpickable. Remotes are not necessary for some things, right?

Unlocking your front door from 50 yds away is a very interesting concept. Have you ever thought of developing this idea? If you decide to you better get a patent for it or I might beat you to the punch.

b/c if you park your car in the garage then you most of the time you go in through the garage door... which is what i do...
since most people have a garage, most people dont leave through the front door..hence no need of having one...
might i make a note to the smartasses out there that will respond "i always leave out my front door"....this is why i used the word 'most.'

Yes it is possible. You will need a door operator that works with remote control. Any local door installer should be able to help you.

Actually, they DO have an automatic front door opener. Of course you have to buy a new door and the door slides automatically.

why do you want to do that? while the front door opens and you are getting out of your car or crossing the street, something might run in your house, like your neighbors flea invested cat or pitbull or their muddy kid.
