Been to Tahoe during winter, loved it.

My bro and I are going to Sequoyah and Yosemite at the end of August, should be nice, and a lot closer to coast than Tahoe.

Lake Tahoe is beautiful, but if you want a secluded beach to ponder your thoughts goto Bodega Bay. If you have seen the film "BIRDS" you will see it there. it has great beaches and the Tides warf Hotel is still there. Get a table on the ocean front and contemplate life. It would be the best place to do it .

San Francisco of course; Berkeley for the retro 60s feeling; Carmel/Monterey area (scenery, shopping, aquarium in Monterey); San Simeon (Hearst Castle); Cambria--neat little town; Pismo Beach/Avila Beach/Morro Bay/San Luis Obispo area: great beaches, shops, atmosphere.

Marin County: Sausalito, a neat little town, 'tho a bit on the affected side.

Calistoga/Napa/Sonoma--weather nice; wineries; scenery.

Ukiah/Fort Bragg/Mendocino: scenery, food, funky shops and eateries.

Camping down by Big Sur.

The Gold Country: Jackson/ Sonora.

Lake Tahoe is very beautiful. Yosemite Valley is even more beautiful but impossible to get accommodations without reserving far in advance.

UC Berkely, Point Reyes is a BEUTIFUL national park, and u hike 3 miles in to get to the beach. SF is great too, and you can not miss the Charles Schultz museum in Santa Rosa.

Tahoe is great, but Mendocino on the coast is quiet, mellow and beautiful.
