My PC is running Windows 2000 and has BT Anytime Dial Up and it was working well and then I tried to go on the internet the other day and it said there was no dial tone. I checked the cables and still no dial tone so I got new cables and it still isnt working. It says the modem is working fine but we had a thunder storm earlier that day. Why isnt it working?

The easiest way to check to see if you have a dial tone is to disconnect the wire from the modem and get a telephone and plug the wire to the phone and listen for the dialtone. If you're not getting a dial tone, then you really don't have a dial tone.

As the previous poster said. You can try to mess with your telephone wiring in your telephone box and see if you're getting a dial tone from outside of the house to determine if it's your house wiring of telephone company's wiring to you house but you're probably better off letting the BT people come and test out your wiring and isolate the problem if you're not sure about this.

And thunderstorm can take out modems very easily also so if you have a dialtone when you hook a phone then your modem might be shot.

And this might be a great time to consider switching over to broadband also.

Are you able to dial when using a phone connected directly into the jack? If you get dial tone when you hook up a phone then some part of the BT Anytime Dial Up software may be corrupted or the modem driver may be corrupted. Try uninstalling the modem driver and reinstalling; same thing with the BT Anytime Dial Up software.

Take a telephone to the test box on the outside of your house. On the right side, unplug the cable, and plug in the telephone. If there's a dial tone, the problem is inside the house. If there's no dial tone, the problem is with the phone company's lines.

click no for the default

Now get a friend to help you out - In the Text box put in Modem Test - click next - NOW put in the area code for your area then the next box put in the telephone number of you friend - click next

DO NOT click dial

Now Telephone you friend - whilst on the line with them Click on dial - NOW you should hear you computer try to pick up on the line - you should hear a very audiable click and the dial tone (LOTS OF BEEPS) down the phone line - if you cann't hear it ask you Pal if they can

Can you plug a phone into the jack and get a dial tone? If you can, and you've checked cables, your modem probably got zapped by a surge. Nothing to do but replace it.
