I used to really like algebra and trig. I hated calculus. Too many "theories". Once anything gets past the point where I can't see using it...ever...then I'm uninterested. I just don't have the faith that all the formulas are actually correct. Maybe they messed up. You never know because you can't use that crap in real life so its all a bunch of numbers that mean nothing.

With a proper foundation in mathematics one may study almost anything in depth. Favorites topics of mine that require more advanced mathematical thinking include chemistry and electronics.
Before I became a mathematics professor I worked various jobs to get through college. One job was a designer at a defense contractor where I used simple math (mostly trigonometry) all day long. I visited a HUGE defense contractor in the Dallas area and I was amazed at the number of people using calculus and differential equations to perform their daily jobs. I also noticed that most were women and most were Asian.
It is true that all one needs in life are the basics taught by the 5th grade. However, if one has higher aspirations in life, then an advanced knowledge beyond what one thinks one will ever use is definitely required.
For all those that ask "when will I ever use this stuff [mathematics]?" the answer is simple: You will never use mathematics because you are not able to do anything beyond balancing a check book. {These comments were intended more for folks like jmk_jenmarie and not 440 Dart Racer.}
It's a shame that people can be so short-sighted and ignorant. It is better to create opportunities for oneself than it is to close doors.

I'm currently taking calculus, and would like to move on and take differential equations. If I could pursue any branch of mathematics. It would be cryptography. I've always thought it was cool that you can hide something in plain site, or use a small bit of known information extrapolate secrets.

Algebra and trigonometry are my favorite types of math because of the logic thats involved in solving those equations.

Umm...I'm only in eighth grade, so I don't know XD I took Pre-Algebra in 6th, Algebra in 7th, and I'm taking Geometry now. I really liked Algebra, but Geometry is fun and easy...so I'm not sure. ^_^
