I think they have a rotten apple down at the patent office.

I went to the Patent Office to register some of my inventions.

I went to the main desk to sign in and the lady at the desk had a form that had to be filled out. She wrote down my personal info and then asked me what I had invented.

I said, "A folding bottle."

She said, "Okay, what do you call it?"

I said "A Fottle."

"What else do you have?"she asked me.

I said "A folding carton."

"And what do you call it?"

I said "A Farton."

She snickered and said, "Those are silly names for products! And one of them sounds kind of crude."

I was so upset by her comment that I grabbed the form and left the office without even telling her about my folding bucket.

Rotten Apple Meaning

With a real barrel of apples, if one rotten one is left in the barrel, sooner or later, it will cause the rest to turn rotten also. Similarly one disgruntled employee, a player with poor sportsmanship, a soldier with morale problems, if they are not removed from the workplace (team, regiment, etc) will cause the rest of the people to "go bad".

If you put one rotten apple ina barrel of good crisp ones, they will begin to rot. The saying is used when a bad acting kid mixes into a group of better acting kids. He may intice them to do things that they know is wrong and then they continue to"rot" by doing more and more bad things.

As a team is only as good as it's worst player.

That someone who is bad natured can influence others that normally are not, peer pressure.

The negativeness of one thing can advertly change the outcome of the "whole"

Rot is infectious, so a little bit of corruption or whatever can have a detrimental effect on the integrity of the whole.
