Sounds like arthritis is setting in. A torn meniscus would hurt on the side of the knee, not the knee itself, depending where the tear is located. It would also hurt on a more constant basis anytime you used the leg, not just climbing. Arthritis also causes swelling.

The crackling is classic sign of early arthritis. This is also a fairly common age for the onset. Take cosamin ds caps by Nutramax. They were recommended to me by an orthopedic surgeon. They will slow the process down according to him.

Somethings breaking up and you have small chips breaking and moving around in there. Usually you can heal it and it will float to another part of the knee and attach itself and stop bothering you. But if you keep stressing it and using it. It might get in the way of other parts of the knee and do more damage. Usually they will go in there with a small incision and take out the floater bone tissue or shave off the scar tissue that is binding up your knee movement. In either case. Stop moving it or using it for sports or heavy bending or weight. See a doctor for pro advice. X-rays a must!

You may have a torn meniscus (cartilage). Go to the doctor NOW and get an MRI - an xray won't show it. If you wait it only gets worse. It will hurt like hell and you'll need knee surgery to repair the cartilage. Mine was so bad the surgery took awhile - they had to shave the jagged edges down and pick out the little broken off pieces of cartilage. I was laid up for about 6 weeks.
