If you have documentation that your dog is a service dog, you need to present it and they have to leave you alone about it. I believe that you and your dog are covered by the ADA (Americans With Disabilities Act.)

If your dog is an official service dog for the disabled, there is no legal prohibition against your dog accompanying you in public places.. But you have to be the designated disabled person for that to work.
You should contact an advocacy group and also look at the Americans with Disabilities Act for your legal rights...If you have the right, tell the police chief to go f himself. Is this in some redneck part of the country or what? Perhaps learn the banjo, make moonshine, chew tobacco, put an NRA sticker on your car, and have a gun rack on the back of your car (preferably a truck), they might like you better :)

If your dog is a licsenced service dog with a working vest, he cannot legally be kept out of public places.
If your dog does not have the lisence and the vest, then there is not proof it is trained as a serivce dog, or that you need one.
Your recourse in this situation then would be to get your dog lisenced and purchase him a vest through the service dogs agency.

To Christopher .... blind people are not the only ones who have service dogs, service dogs help people with mobility problems, the deaf, people with seizures, and people with severe anxiety disorders, among others.

For god sake do not call the ACLU, explain to the chief that it is a service animal and is allowed in public places. It is the law, unless you live in a town that has outlawed it for some reason.
If this fails, call a lawyer.
How can you read this?

That's crazy. There are federal laws that allow you to have a service dog. Lodge a complaint with the mayor's office, contact federal authorities.

I believe service dogs are exempt from most regulations,
I'd talk to a lawyer and see what your rights are.

Depends whether the dog is working or not or certified by a recognized program.

Talk to the chief again, and ask where it sais so. Research the rules he quotes and see if he is right. He may be, if not ask hiim to change the opinion

Call the ACLU and/or any lawyer. If you are truely requiring the use of a service animal, I don't think they can prohibit it.
