It's actually funny because this was discussed in a Journal's editorial just a few months ago. If I can find the source I'll update this, but this question can be answered using genetic reasoning.
The chicken came first.
Reasoning:
Although the embryo inside of an egg represents a genetically different organism, the physical egg is derived from the female parent. As such, from a genetic standpoint, the embryo inside the egg is a chicken, but the egg in which it resides came from the progenitor species.

The answer is very vely simple. It is the female egg which gets fertilized.Fetilization can be done in vitro or by some means which we do not understand.. So it is the female egg that is important in this question .
Your question may have be more inquisitive if it was asked how did The egg get Created.
You may have to go to Intelligent Design Theory for that description.

The egg--you can't have a chicken if it was never born..and it can't 'morph' from something into a chicken, therefore the egg came first.

SIMPLE....
The first chickens would have been carnivorous and would have eaten any eggs they found laying around.....Therefore if the chicken laid the egg, and then ate it, the species would have died out. Thus, by simple Darwinian logic, it doesn't matter because the chicken as we know it, is extinct
