Home Depot and Lowe's sell water heaters and provide installation. They have a variety of types and sizes. Most plumbers can help you with this as well. The cost of the water heater will depend on the size and whether it is gas or electric. The range is $200-$500. Add on at least $200 for installation, more if it they have to reconfigure your plumbing to make the new tank fit. Not cheap, but better than cold showers.

Go to Lowes. They have a high efficiency 80 gallon electric for around $450.00. Depending on where you live installation would run from 250-450. Here in SE NC it would cost you roughly $ 300 during normal working hours. If you have a gas water heater I would recommend that you install a tank less ( on demand ) type as a replacement, you wont regret it.

Unfortunately once the tank is leaking the unit must be replaced. I was checking out 40 gallon gas w/h at Home Depot yesterday. Cost range is $209-249 plus tax. Add $150-$200 for installation. Electric w/h are less money but cost more to operate than natural gas units. Good luck.

Either your other answerers are getting distress sale pricing, or the plumbers are looking for work in their area. In East Central Florida your retail price for a new water heater is $800.00. This would be a real good time to call up a friend in the biz that does installations on the side, or take out a second mortgage.

I don't think any of those others have had a water heater installed for quite some time. You may save $200 by purchasing it yourself, but you'll be out of pocket at least $600 by the time it's all over. Permits, upgrades, inspection fees, additional materials, etc. GOOD LUCK !!

electric water heaters are less than gas. the size is a cost factor also. You should be able to get one installed for around $500.00
