Before aluminum cans, soft drinks were sold in steel cans, not tin. Before that, in bottles. Pepsi began using steel cans in 1948, and switched to aluminum in 1967.

Soft drinks in cans began appearing in the late '30s, and were generally perfected by the late '40s. Early cans had a cone-top design that was sealed with the sort of crown cap used on bottles. Flat-top cans were developed in the mid-50s. Aluminum cans were introduced in the late '50s and early '60s.

Aluminum soft drink cans differed greatly from their steel predecessors, as they were made from only two pieces -- a body and a top. This allowed 360-degree printing on the body. In contrast, steel cans were three-piece, body, top and bottom, and the body was seamed.

I was born in 1945 grew up in the 1950's.....
Soda like Pepsi & Coka-Cola came in a bottle,(cost 5 cents)
I don't ever recall a Pepsi or Coke in a Can until aluminum cans. ( 1970's ??)

I remember real beer cans made out of steel (so called tin can).
You need a opener ( church key ) to punch holes in the top, in order to drink.
If You smashed one of these on your head it would have knocked you out.

They were a lot like the metal soup or tomato cans we still use.

geeeezzzz...I feel old right now.

Pepsi:Cola introduced their first cone-topped can in 1949. The can was designed to use the same crown cap as the bottles. These 12oz cans sold at three for a quarter. Lack of consumer interest prevented the wide-spread distribution until soda cans made a resurgence in 1960.

I don't think it ever was in a tin can. It went from a streamlined glass bottle to aluminum cans and tall glass bottles to the plastic 2 litre.

Back when I was a kid, in the 60s, soda cans were made of tin, instead of aluminum.
