It doesn't hurt it is just extremly uncomfortable. You are in a small room with the doctor (if male there is a nurse too) You are in a small gown and lay on your back on the bed. First they will do the breast exam which only takes a second....They check for lumps during the exam. Then they will ask you to put your legs in the stur ups and they insert an L shaped metal clamp in you agian it doesn't hurt. This clamp opens you up. They then swab you ( you might feel a little cramp, like a period) Then they insert their fingers and with the other hand press firmly on the outer part of your tummy so one hand in and the other out pressing towards eachother feeling for any abnormalities. Like I said the whole thing is really pain less, just uncomfortable. And my first visit was when i was a virgin too. I needed the pill for cramps so I know where you are coming from. I have had 6 and it never gets easier. It sucks, but is pain free. Don't worry.

welcome to the world of womanhood...you'll be doing this yearly for the rest of your life!

as for expectations...you will have a little discomfort during the procedure, especially if you are nervous or scared, so try to relax the best you can - take plenty of deep breaths and try to think about something other than what's going on. Usually when they do a pap, they also do a pelvic exam (examining inside and out visually and by pressing here and there to be sure everything is where it should be) and also a breast exam (looking for lumps, etc). If you have never experienced penetration, then it's possible you still have your hymen intact (a piece of tissue that covers the opening of the vagina - which can be torn through other means besides sex - such as tampon use)...so they may have to break that and that might cause some pain and soreness for a day or two.

And just remember - we all dread it, and we all get embarassed, but to the doc it's just another day at work - so don't get too self-concious - they've seen it all! It's over and done with in like 10 minutes and you've got another year before you have to do it again!

All I can say is. . .relax! It is a little uncomfortable and it will hurt down there if you don't relax yourself. I didn't think they did those on virgins. Are you a virgin or you're just not sexually active right now? Well anyway, after the put the speculum in your vagina, they'll scrape a few cells from your cervix. It feels like a little pinch. It'll be over in no time. . . .just relax! That's the key.

no, nothing to expect, just make sure you take a shower and clean up before you go so you won't be paranoid about anything and just relax and remember every woman has to go through this, (even the one that is doing the exam) it's just a way to make sure we are healthy. Good luck

It certainly doesn't hurt - it's a bit cold.

Mainly...it's just a little embarassing. Not just the first time. I'm 50 now...the mother of 3 and I still get embarassed.
