im not talking about obsessive compulsive disorder or anything along those lines...

for example, i believe i have an obsessive personality because i really get into things and literally obsess about them for weeks on end (sometimes months). but then i just get over it!!

i dont think i have an addictive personality because i dont easily get addicted to things. i was a smoker for nearly 3 years and then one day i just decided to quit and i did....no withdraw or cravings or anything along those lines! and i havent smoked a thing since!!

Sure--interesting point.

We can all be obsessive or addicted. If it's a positive thing, we are passionate. If others don't approve, or there is something harmful to others about it, it's obsessive. IF it is harmful to you, it's addictive.

Good for you that you quit smoking!

You bet there is and we talk about it every day at the 12 step meetings I go to. What your dealing with is 1st step, We are powerless over our addiction(desires) and our life had become unmanageable. Thoughts that have power over us and we have no way to change the focus us ally make for a unmanageable life, we forget things,we put off doing what we should, we call it renting to much space in our head. I keep saying we because I'm not alone in this way of thinking and neither are you, it's more common that you may think, I'm not talking about O.C.B. here just that gerbil in a cage spinning round and round. I feel you made that first move recognizing you have a problem and talking about it, another thing is to not act out on a obsession, doing the first one it's called,it can be any thing, lust, food, porno, gambling any of the negative desires we may have. There are ways to stop the obsession, meditation, deep breathing to name a few, even singing the more common one we do is say the Serenity Prayer-God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference-today. The best to you, Peace

yes there is a such thing as an addictive or obsessive personality. Dry skin really really bothers me, and I'm not speaking of my own skin but others as well. No matter who it is I offer them lotion and I nag them until they accept it. The sound of rubbing dry hands or feet irritates me. The sound makes me salivate. I won't let anyone with dry hands touch me. I carry a huge bottle of lotion in my bag. I wake up in the middle of the night to apply lotion on me and my hubby. I use lotion every five to ten minutes. My family and friends along with strangers thought that I was very rude to tell them how dry they look. I've had this lotion obsession since I was an infant. My mom told me that I use to lick my hands so they could stay moisturize. As an adult I've learned to not nag but offer lotion only once and if they refused, our conversations become very brief or I look away.
And coffee as been my very best friend for 17 years and I can't let it go. If I haven't had my cup by noon I get the worst headache and a bad attitude.

I do believe both. i get obssessed over things ecspecially the fact that i want a boyfriend and cant have one (its driving me crazy). I dont want to try and look, because they say that when you look for love u wont find it. But I've been single for like 4 and 1/2 years. So i feel like i am ready 4 another relationship now. its not like i rush from 1 relationship 2 another, i take my time. I also find food very addictive. And alcohol, but i've slowed down on drinking ALOT.

I am, for sure, I'll get into something and be so gung ho that everything else pales in comparison, sometimes for months or years , then the day comes up that I am not interested anymore and I'll be on another kick.

The only thing I've ever stayed addicted to are my husband, first always, and my kids when they were younger. I adore them!

I think we all have the potential for an addictive or obsessive personality, but are prevented by not meeting that particular obsession or addiction.

yeah, i do believe that there is addictive and obsessive personalities.
i think that is one of the things that drives an obese person. some that are obese, dont eat because they are hungry, they eat just because. my girlfriend, is that way. i cant mention any kind of food to her, because if i mention it, she will think about that particular food until she has it. she hates to watch tv, bcuz if she sees something food related, she will obsess about it til she gets it.

You are ok - especially since you are aware of it. When you get into things, are they positive things?
When you start into something - take a step back and analyze it. Is it harmful, helpful? Try to be balanced in your life.
You sound motivated, which is really good- just keep it in check.

Once an addict, forever~

"No-- really I'm cured! I'm fine"

DENIAL! You've regressed onto the bottom rung!!!!
Say it with me! "Hello my name is ______ and I'm an addict"

This is critical. You need immediate attention.

***Goddamn, the person above me, kerik, is either suffering the most insane thing ever, or is very convincing. I feel guilty, at least, for disturbing the neighbors, I laughed so hard.
