My dad was good at that. He could insult someone, and they never knew that he had until they really thought about it. I've had a few good comebacks, but nothing like what my dad could do. In the military, he was able to tell his NCO's to go to hell without them even realizing it.
However, one of my best comebacks was after a night of heavy drinking, where I did something irresponsible (slept with someone I never would have otherwise). The whole next day, he kept talking about what a s!ut I was, and that kind of thing. Anyway, a guy that I was interested in came over to where we were all hanging out, and the guy that I had slept with told the other guy that he should get me drunk. So I said, "Some people don't HAVE to get me drunk to sleep with me."
That guy was such a jerk.
Of course, I do better with the written word than with spoken words. I've insulted people on here lots of times without them realizing it.

Once, when someone was horribly rude and obnoxious to my mother (a very sweet and sophisticated woman), she politely replied "Well, f*** you very much for your time." then she turned around and calmly walked away. It took the person a while to figure out that he had just gotten the smack down from this very genteel lady who had obviously had enough of his crud!
