Oh for cryin' out loud - don't believe everything you see on the internet, it'll just drive you bonkers!

Some American patent holders can legitimately claim credit for many of the inventions we take for granted today. However, most inventions, including the three items you mentioned, are the result of many various concepts that were invisioned, created, improved upon by many different people, and finally collected together, ultimately becoming the delightful toys we know & love today.

As for giving the credit for the auto, railway, or TV to any one particular individual? That's a tough call, no matter who owns the patents. You might as well try to figure out just who invented the wheel, or fire.

And as for why so many Americans like to take credit for so many inventions? Well ... because Americans have indeed invented so many usefull things (just ask Al Gore), and taking credit is fun fun fun fun fun.

Signed ~ an arrogant (not "arragant") American git.

Wait, we didnt invent everything?

I think what you are seeing is that history is taught in respect to the region where you are raised... History as it relates to the people living there now... Most american probably think that the Model T was the first automobile, and dont know that a german "git" invented it.

I am certain that in Germany they teach their history (re: WWII) to be more forgiving of the actions of the German masses than say, the English would.

And I am sure that when the English teach about there colonizing of Africa and India, it is taught with a little more self forgiveness...

But since America did "INVENT" the Internet we can be as ignorant and arrogant as we want... we created the medium for our own foolishness...

Just a thought...But i am just a Git

- We amuse the world with Mad Magazine. There's a reason it's translated into many languages.
- Our very own Chubby Checker gave the world a cool dance called The Twist.
- We are champions at the Hula Hoop (at least I think we are).
- Charles M. Schulz created Snoopy and Charlie Brown.
- We make one of the more popular beverages in the world -- Coca Cola.
- Norman Rockwell is one of our better-known artists.
- Mark Twain was a very famous American novelist.
- We are proud of our statesmen, writers and inventors such as Benjamin Banneker, Langston Hughes and George Washington Carver.
- Nobody could do jazz, soul and blues like Billie Holiday, Janis Joplin and Louis Armstrong.

And that's just a miniscule sample of American influence on world culture.

Yes we're backward aren't we... Let's see, most stable democracy in the history of the world. Only 1 civil war, which was tragic and just. The model of a government most imitated.

Europe, and the intellectuals you worship, have led to the death of countless millions. Look at the causes of WWI and then proclaim your superiority over America. Idiot.

America has revolutionized the modern world. Almost every invention of importance has been a product of America.

If you consider that French guy who invented that several thousand pound (even kg, euro) steam powered carriage to be the father of the automobile then yes. There are similarly lame examples to your other inventions. Owned.

You sound really jealous of Americans! I guess your life is not as cushy as ours is, and you are from a 3rd world country where you can't criticize your own government or culture for fear of reprisal~! All your questions are demeaning to you only as it is obvious you don't have a life! Why don't you go and invent something so your country can share some glory? Oh never mind, you are probably too lazy and would rather just complain about what you don't have. Why not tell everyone where you are from, or are you too ashamed of your country? By the way, your English and spelling could be better too. Oh and by the way, we invented the internet too, so you'd better thank us!

Hi there,

I am not an American firstly so forgive me for responding to this one.

Secondly, I am not here to fight with you. But dont you think you are making one sweeping generalization that all Americans are arrogant or crazy? Can you for one second look at whatever your community is and see if all of you are totally perfect? (you dont have to prove anything to us, if you can look at ur community and you realize what you see, that will do.)

Please remember that not all Americans are bad or arrogant. They exist everywhere regardless of country, color or religion. There are absolutely no saints on earth but there are plenty who follow a decent conscience including Americans.

There are sadly some political weirdos who are ruining the names of the entire American group.

Generalizations are simply uneducated comments my friend. Read and understand people better before you vent your pent up feelings...and that too...to the wrong group.

The people in this forum are not the weirdos you caused you this anger. Talk to them straight. And leave these guys alone.

Have a nice weekend.

Well, we mostly spell "civilisation" correctly here in "Amerika".

(there is even a spell check right above the dialog box, Genius. If you are going to insult an entire country, you might as well spell your insults correctly! Ha)

civ·i·li·za·tion (sv-l-zshn) KEY

NOUN:

An advanced state of intellectual, cultural, and material development in human society, marked by progress in the arts and sciences, the extensive use of record-keeping, including writing, and the appearance of complex political and social institutions.
The type of culture and society developed by a particular nation or region or in a particular epoch: Mayan civilization; the civilization of ancient Rome.
The act or process of civilizing or reaching a civilized state.
Cultural or intellectual refinement; good taste.
Modern society with its conveniences: returned to civilization after camping in the mountains.

America is mostly a country of the unbelievably stupid, naive and ignorant.

However, it has become rich and powerful because of a land rich in natural resources (taken with much bloodshed from the natives) and because of a small minority of brilliant scientists and intellectuals who are held in contempt by the majority who take advantage of their achievements.

America has been so provably wrong on so many issues it is absurd and they are too stupid to see it.

1. They now talk about solving the problems of the Middle East after voting in a president who initially said the rest of the world didn't matter to Americans (and wanted to pull out of the Palestinian/Israeli peace process- the Palestinian situation being a prime recruiting sergeant for terrorists)

2. They ignored the rest of the world who warned that they should take stock and plan before invading Iraq (and many of these supported eventual military action.

3. They said they don't believe in Global Warming (the fact that they would ignore their own Academy of Science shows how anti-intellectual they are).

A lot of the inventions that are most useful today were made in the US... by inventors and scientists who originally came from many other countries. The US gave them the liberty and platform by which they could freely express their ideas, as many of the nations that fathered them were not interested in free thinkers. This was called the "Brain Drain" if you want more info.
So it is not so much that 'Americans' (you used that word), invented them but that it is a country that encourages such creativity and free thinking, which many other countries have benefited from.
