My mother and sister have two mini-weiner-dogs. So I took them out the other day and their poor little legs barely kept them above the wet grass. Then later they were whining because they couldn't jump up onto the couch with me(I did help). I know some of them have back problems later in life. Isn't it kinda like if someone was breeding a race or dwarfs , would you think that sick and/or cruel?

I think Dachshunds were originally bred to hunt small game. Their little bodies and short legs are good for rabbit holes and such. And they make good little search dogs now too.

No...I have a chiuaua..It's only cruel if you laugh hysterically when they miss the couch...yes, I'm guilty...so you go and buy a little step stool for the bed and the couch and as far as wet grass goes,it's also fun to watch them spaz on the floor trying to dry off after the walk.., but bring paper towels and try not to walk the poor babies on wet grass. They also make lil doggie shoes...which is equally entertaining, because they kick their feet alot when they first wear them.. my dog refuses...he tried to bite my hand off when i tried to put a cute little harley hat on him...I guess he doesn't like looking butch. *sniquer*

Breeding dwarfs would be entertaining.

The fact that we breed dogs for money at all is cruel. The Humane Society averages that there are 6 to 8 million dogs abandoned to shelters each year. Yet we still breed animals for profit. It's so irresponsible.

In some cases I actually do... I have a Miniature Pinscher, he's small but not too small. About 13 pounds.. He can do everything our other dogs can. But I've seen a Miniature Pomeranian!! Poms are small enuf who the hell would make a mini one!! That's just mean.. They can't do anything! You might as well get a hamster and put a collar on it.

The Dachshund was bred to hunt badgers and other critters that live in holes in the ground. Their appearance, though comical to many was a purely functional design. This also explains why some of them are so aggressive for such small dogs.

Wow, this has been bugging me for years. Everybody knows specialized breeds often get genetic disorders, like most German Shepherds have leg or back problems, etc. I do not see the advantage or the humanity of breeding a creature that will suffer.

Horses are bred for racing; cattle and swine are bred for eating; dogs are bred for a wide variety of reasons. Breeding animals is something people do because they have a specific reason to do it; cruelty or kindness doesn't enter into it.

They call her a teacup pup, I call her the love pup cause she wasn't supposed to be born. There are all sorts of miracle pups out there! No help with your questions I just thought i would share!

Dog natually come in all different sizes. It's not "cruel" that opposums, rats and other smallish mammals exist, so why would it be cruel for small dogs?

It isn't cruel if you continue to help them and try to make the world more accessible to them.
