It's possible teoretically, but I don't think it will worth the hassle.
Beside the engine you will need to replace a whole engine wiring and computer system. Since transmission control and engine control are working together there might be some problem after because the computer system from diesel engine may not work well with tranny from gas engine. Also the tranny is a bit different for gas and for diesel - the gear ratios are most likely different.
The catalytic converter is also different...
so if you want to save on gas, just buy some small Toyota or Honda

Maybe. Keep in mind that the Euro chassis is smaller than the US one, so you may have problems getting the half shafts to connect up if you swap in the gearbox from the diesel. Also, you'll need the computers from the Euro car as well as change out the entire fuel system. That will probably entail some serious surgery on the wiring harness.
Why would you want to do that, though?

A whole lot of fuss for a Ford Focus isn,t it? Seriously for all the problems that you could forsee there would be 50 that you couldn,t.I,m guessing you would have engine wiring hook-up problems, possible engine mounting problems, the exhaust would be different. Not to mention the fact that the on board computer would be completely different and on and on it would go.Your choice but I have swapped engines before not nearly as different as these would be and ran into a lot of unforeseen problems that made me wish I had never attempted them in the first place. But if you choose good luck.

It probably can, but why? Besides engine, you have to change out the whole fuel system, computer, and many other things that go along with doing that kind of swap. Might be better off getting a diesel car.
