Because there is no meaningful cost for asking questions. As a result, questions are wasted.

This tends to happen whenever a resource is free or is underpriced. For example, consider two restaurants. One has free refills, one doesn't. Assuming drink prices are the same, which do you think dispenses more soda? And where are you more likely to "waste" soda by leaving your glass half full?

Spam email is another example. It's free to send an email. As a result, lots of email is worthless spam.

If Yahoo charged $1.00 to ask question, you would see fewer questions, both dumb and not dumb. But the relative number of dumb questions would fall dramatically. A dollar doesn't buy much but I doubt you'd see many people spending one to as a dumb question.

But for now, questions are basically free. Although Yahoo has attempted to impose a cost by charging five "points" per question, this obviously isn't working. Five Yahoo! Question points obviously aren't worth much.

Dumb questions is what keep yahoo answers going. I get a kick out some of questions that I read, like yours.

People ask dumb questions because without it the whole forum would be quite dull. I do not know about you, but too much Philosophy can be quite depressing.

they ask questions that maybe mean something to them even though they may not mean anything to you. then again they may also be bored and looking to get a few laughs by what the answers will be.

then again they may not realize the question is stupid until after it is asked and processed. havent you ever asked a question and then thought oh my god that had to have been the stupidest thing i ever said?

Anonymity. It brings out the moron in people.

Add in the fact that some people are really motivated by any kind of points sytem ... and you have people being "rewarded" for being idiots.

Marvelous system, huh? LOL

Laziness? It's much easier to ask who like vanilla or chocolate or who like my avatar than to come up with a real question of substance.

They lack information seeking skills and honestly know no better way of getting answers.
