What other, more recent, board games can we try?

Your family will probably enjoy Settlers because it is an enjoyable and highly rated game; not because it enjoys Monopoly. If you are looking for an acquisition race that allows you to clobber your opponents, may I suggest you seek out these old but interesting games: Acquire by 3M or Avalon Hill, Ratrace by Waddington's, Fast Food Franchise by TimJim Games or even Buy Low Sell High by Uberplay.

Settlers of Catan is a fantastic game and my guess is that they would like it even more because it doesn't take as much of a time commitment to play as Monopoly. If you are looking for something that is a huge time commitment (like 8 hours) try playing Axis and Allies, true it's a war game but it involves many other aspects of play and can be very intense.
