Prescription prenatal vitamins have more folic acid and iron than regular multivitamins. They also often times have a stool softener, as irregularity is a common symptom in pregnancy. If you are unable to take your ob/gyn's prescription vitamins (often costing $1-$2 per pill), ask him or her what to look for in an over the counter prenatal vitamin.
The important vitamins and minerals for pregnancy are folic acid to prevent neural tube defects and B12 and iron for blood cell synthesis. Newer recommendations also include fish oil or omega-3 fatty acid vitamins. Studies have shown that the omega-3s in these vitamins help with development of the fetus' central nervous system. Fish oil also helps relieve constipation if the stool softener isn't already in the vitamins.
Good luck.

RE:
Pre-natal vitamins?
Do pre-natal vitamins have to be prescribed by a doctor or can they be bought at a store? Are pre-natal vitamins just multi-vitamins for women?

Nobody has mentioned Dollar General or Family Dollar. They cost $2.00 a bottle for 30 tablets. When I took the prescription pre-natal vitamins I was already pregnant. Now that I am trying to conceive again I am taking the over-the-counter ones.

PLEASE IN GOD'S NAME, take your pre-natal vitamins, over the counter or otherwise. They are not just a multi for women. They have nutrients the baby also needs, especially since during this time you may or may not eat properly because of how you may or may not feel. With my first child, I was young and stupid, did not realize how important they really were. I was seven months preg when I lost her, 1 lb, 7oz, she had died inside of me at 6 1/2 months, no kicking, no heartbeat, etc. First thing Dr. asked me was if I was taking my pre-natals daily?
I am not a Dr., this is an honest answer from and honest mother.

I took extra calcium while I was pregnant and taking prenatal vitamins for all of my pregnancies. My doctor was aware of this and approved. Just don't take so much calcium that you are over 2000 mg every day, that would be too much. A regular calcium supplement in the recommended dose will be fine. You will get better absorption of the calcium if you don't take it at the same time of day as the prenatal. I never noticed a difference in my hair or nails while on the vitamins.

You can buy them over the counter in any drug store, and they are multi vitamins-minerals. They are awesome vitamins, not only they will help you health wise but once you have taken them for a week, your nails and hair start growing like crazy! I love them!
You do not need a prescription and you can find them in the section where they have the children's vitamins, you don't even have to ask anyone to help you find them. If you buy them at Wal Mart, you get 100 tablets for about 7 dollars.

Prenatal pills do not have to be prescribed by a doctor. You can buy them at a store. I have bought my first bottle from Kmart, called VitaSmart prenatal vitamins. It says it clear as day on the bottle. My second bottle I went to a vitamin store and bought. They were a little more expensive.

You can get prenatal vitamins at drugstores, Wal-Mart, Target, some grocery stores, etc. They are more than just multi-vitamins for women as they have more of each vitamin than regular multi-vitamins.
