Get a good Internet security Suite, like Panda, or Windows Live, but don't get anything with the name Norton of Symantic. Those two are the same company and they have seriously questionalbe business practices, leaving behind files and folders when you try to remove one of their products from your system, trying to get you to buy their help desk and when you don't planting viruses in your system.
Also, in order to keep people from physically accessing your computer where it is located, always lock your screen when you leave it on and walk away. Use a password on all your accounts too. The first is done by pressing the Windows Logo key and the L key together. When you come back just move your mouse and put in your password. The second is done by going to the Control Panel, then to Accounts, select each account one by one and then click on the link to set a password. This activates the welcome screen, which you will see on boot up and each account holder will have a user name and password which they enter when they click their user name.
These are very simple security measures everybody should take. Also, when you have each account with a password, it is that much more difficult for anyone to crack into your system. They would have to also crack the password to the Aministrators account.
Good luck and have a nice day.

If you want to protect your PC from others who would install software on it, then you will need to setup users and user permissions. This varies based on your OS, for Windows you would make sure that only one account was the 'Administrator' and every other account just had basic access to the machine, standard user.
Hope that helps, its kind of vague, but there probably isn't enough space here to get into the detail necessary to explain user dynamics.
