Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. It may not appeal to everyone's tastes, but it really is a pillar of American literature. It address so many issues as well as being a tale of growing up, it's gotta be one of the best.

Any novel by Robert Heinlein. I'm currently re-reading Stranger in a Strange Land. Wow, he was a brilliant writer! I also love Time Enough for Love, and Number of the Beast, and of course, To Set Sail Boyond the Sunset.
